Is Cryptic Studios the final frontier for Star Trek Online?

star_trek_online.jpgStar Trek Online hasn't had an easy time of it. The game was in development at Perpetual Entertainment, a company also working on a promising Roman mythology-themed MMO called Gods & Heroes. After a round of layoffs, Gods & Heroes was put on "indefinite hold" so the company could devote more time to Star Trek Online (i.e. the one that was going to actually make money). After more layoffs and a few absurd screenshots, the rights were finally yanked. Perpetual withered away shortly thereafter, leaving behind only a low detail image of an officer shooter a phaser at a Gorn off in the distance for 39 points of damage.

Although the tribble has been out of the bag for a while, Cryptic Studios finally announced that, yes, they're the ones now making Star Trek Online. They're a viable company in no danger of going anywhere, with City of Heroes up and running, Champions Online in development with a good head of steam behind it, and now Star Trek Online poised to let them cash in on a well-known license.

The official site just went live and more details are promised at an August 10 Star Trek convention in Vegas. Until then, enjoy the nondescript space screenshot above. Maybe you can imagine a space ship in it.

Is it possible for a Star Trek MMO to work? Your thoughts Mr. Chick?

according to the site

"You Are the Captain: Command your own starship as a Federation Captain or a Klingon Warrior. Outfit it with the systems that you need to make your mark in the galaxy. Customize your ship as you see fit. Recruit, train and mold your crew into an elite force for exploration and combat."

so im guessing u get to captain a ship at some time. maybe ur "party" is ur crew (helm, engineer, tactical). this would be an awesome time to break away form numbered levels and have named ranks (lieutenant, commander, ensign), imo. man i'ld love to serve or command a voyager class ship [giggles]! and if they aren't ur crew, maybe ur party is a squadrin.

Just a nitpick, but Cryptic doesn't own or run City of Heroes. They sold it (including the IP) to NCSoft back in 2007, I believe.

Dustin, it depends on what you mean by "works". If you mean to be successful enough to turn a profit, then I'd say "yes, absolutely!" But if you mean satisfy hardcore Trekkies everywhere, then I'd say "not a chance". :) It depends on which way Cryptic is taking the game, how they'll handle space travel/exploration/combat, what sort of economy the game will have, and so on. We'll see as more details are released. To their credit, Cryptic showed with City of Heroes that they know how to adapt the basic MMO model to the subject matter.
