One moment it's Monday morning. The next moment, after a brief blur of game demos and announcements, it's Thursday evening. E3 2008 is over.
Although it went by awfully fast, this was easily the most manageable E3 I've ever attended, with a small show floor because of the strict limits on each exhibitor's space. Instead of aurally jostling each other in an enormous hall, most games were shown in meeting rooms, where it was easy to move from demo to demo, ask questions, and get hands-on time. All the meeting rooms were clustered under the same roof instead of scattered around Santa Monica like last year's E3.
Attendance must have been way down, because there was almost no crush of humanity. It was easy to drop by a meeting room for an unscheduled visit and not have them laugh politely and explain that they're all booked up. It'll be interesting to see where E3's governing body, the ESA, goes from here. They can't be happy about the turn-out.
However, although it was manageable this year, it was also thoroughly overwhelming. I've been covering E3 since it began in 1995. But I've always been part of a larger team, given specific games or publishers to write about. This time, however, I tackled it on my own (with a little help from the Sci Fi Wire, which covered some of the press conferences). One thing I learned is that one person trying to see all of E3 is about as viable as seeing all of Disney World in one day. Ha ha, nice try. You simply cannot do it! The secret is to prioritize and resign yourself to missing a lot of cool stuff. You'd think I'd have picked that up at some point over the last 13 years. I'm a bit slow sometimes.
Over the next few days, I'll be writing up everything I've seen. So keep checking back. If I saw it, you'll be able to read something about it here. You can click on the E3 section on the left to get a complete listing by game name. And then, starting next week, Fidgit will return to its regularly unscheduled goofing around.
