Wii Fit day eleven: the game

wii_fit_11.jpg

It's taken me only ten short days to decide that Wii Fit is terrible as an exercise game. So let's consider it as a game game. What about the minigames? Maybe it's something fun to keep around and whip out when company shows up, like Link's Crossbow Training or Wii Sports.

The problem is that if you're going to drag out the Balance Board™, you really should have something fairly dramatic to show for it. None of the minigames is anything more than weight shifting gimmickry, ranging from the ridiculous (hoola-hooping) to the tedious (tightrope challenge) to the "Wouldn't You Rather Just Play SSX Already?" (downhill skiing).

Wii Sports holds up as something to show company because there's no set up. It offers a wide variety of activities, almost all of which are designed for people to play with each other. The silly bowling is nothing like the silly tennis which is nothing like the silly baseball, and everyone's doing it with each other, so the silliness is shared. This makes it entirely plausible to slip the Wii Sports disc into the Wii to show off for friends.

But there's no such variety with Wii Fit's™ minigames, which go with the single Balance Board™ claiming the middle of the living room like some loud guest who demands everyone play charades with his special house rules. And each person has to mount the Balance Board™ singly, standing before everyone atop an inch-tall Stage of Shame and leaning for a few minutes. So, no, Wii Fit doesn't work as a set of minigames to show company. They might be curious, having heard about it on TV or something, but assure them that it's not worth dragging out of the closet.

Oh, and I skipped my exercise routine today. I'm not quite ready to be berated for gaining the 22 pounds I supposedly lost yesterday.
