Grand Theft Auto IV publisher Take Two announced yesterday in an investor conference call that the downloadable content for the game has been delayed. Instead of being a part of the company's fiscal fourth quarter, it's now a part of their fiscal first quarter for 2009. What this means to you is that you won't get any new, well, whatever it is they're planning to add until Thanksgiving at the earliest. And maybe not even until January.
Take Two stressed the reason for the delay is "portfolio balancing", which is just a fancy way of saying they could release it this summer if they wanted to, but it'll look much better on the books if they rake in all that cash – and they will rake in a lot of cash – as a part of fiscal 2009.
The really fun part happened later in the day, when Microsoft told a couple of sites "Nuh-uh". Take-Two revealed last year they've been paid $50 million by Microsoft to deliver two "episodes" for Grand Theft Auto IV. Apparently, Microsoft wants its portfolio balanced a little differently.
We'll see how it shakes out, but my money is on an earlier release. Literally. I'm sitting here ready to buy however many Xbox Live Points it takes to download whatever Rockstar makes. 800? 8000? Hook me up, Rockstar. C'mon man. Heck, I'll buy horse armor for Grand Theft Auto IV and there aren't even any horses in the game.
Oh, and if you're playing GTA4 on a Playstation 3, your downloadable content plans are still on track. Which is to say, there are none, sucker!

First...I'm a 360 owner....but mainly a PC Gamer.
Meh....I'll probably pick it up whenever it comes out. Not nearly as enthusiastic about it as I was for the game itself.
Seeing how this site is brand new...is it really smart to piss off half the high end console market (note: the wii is not a high end console) with that last comment?
Other gaming sites...even if their writers favor one over the other...usually practice a bit more discretion when it comes to playing favorites.

Hey man, Tom's not playing favorites. He's just stating the facts.

I'm sure the gaming press will let us know how the DLC is the Midsummer Night's Dream of games, and how it rates an 11 for two dozen more 'fight in a warehouse then chase the invincible last guy in a car/bike' missions.

Has there been any hints of what DLC Rockstar has planned for GTA4? I would rather have more options to do in the world over just a few more story missions.

I am hoping for:
Bicycles, horses, buggies, haircuts, aeroplanes, radio stations ("satellite radio"?), outfits, guns, and a satisfying wrap-up to all those awesome storylines they left in mid-air. There are some rumours about new cities, but I am skeptical.
I have a feeling it will be like two new cars and a new fast-food brand, though.

My guess is that it'll be multiplayer content - hopefully cooperative missions, but more likely stuff for other modes. I grant you that DLC for this sort of game doesn't exactly have a giant history to draw on, but in general, if a game has multiplayer the DLC's usually been for multiplayer.
