National media just doesn't understand videogaming (part 317 of a bajillion-part series)

age_of_conan_breast_size.jpgOn Wait Wait Don't Tell Me, a news quiz show on NPR, there's a feature called "Bluff the Listener", in which the show's panel presents three stories, two of which are fabricated. A call-in listener has to guess which is the real story. This week's stories were about virtual worlds. See if you can spot the real story:

* A player was busted for cheating in an online multiplayer figure skating game that uses a special board. He had recruited his girlfriend to play for him. She happened to be Tara Lipinski.

* PETA was protesting an MMO in which you try to liberate a unicorn on the grounds that even animals that don't exist shouldn't be imprisoned, virtually or otherwise.

* Players in Age of Conan complained when the size of characters' breasts was reduced in a patch.

You probably got it right, since you're a gamer and the rest of the world isn't. The listener, who also got it right, was a technical writer in Michigan. In other words, probably a gamer. Which means he knows that no real-world figure skater is automatically going to be able to play a figure skating game, and that no MMO is going to be built around a single quest even if it's not as stupid as liberating a unicorn. Or maybe he just read the stories that made the rounds when Age of Conan reduced breast sizes. Hurr hurr, breast sizes!

Furthermore, we know there isn't any figure skating game with an add-on board. We also know know Tara Lipinski isn't going to be dating some guy who plays competitively in such a game. And PETA isn't quite crazy enough to protest…well, okay, maybe the PETA bit was plausible.
