Metal Gear Solid 4 booms

metal_gear_solid_4.jpgVG Chartz "exclusively reveals" that Metal Gear Solid 4 sold 1.3 million copies on its first day. That and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee, as they say. They also say "good enough for government work", "close enough for horseshoes and hand grenades", and "even a blind squirrel will dig up an acorn". They particularly say these things when they're talking about VG Chartz, a site that does a healthy amount of guesstimating when it comes to what passes for data.

VG Chartz' math looks suspect when they claim Metal Gear Solid 4 sold over 350,000 in Japan and over 400,000 in the Americas (hi Canada!), but presumably not over enough to round up to the next increment of 50,000. That leaves at least 450,000 sold in Europe and the rest of Asia, which would be pretty surprising for outnumbering the game's primary markets. In other words, this might be an "exclusive revelation" because it's implausible. In addition, VG Chartz claims that nearly triple the usual number of Playstation 3s were sold, implying that the game is good enough to move otherwise sluggish hardware. That's slightly less implausible given the bundle deals Konami and Sony cooked up to encourage people that a Metal Gear Solid is the perfect time to go ahead and get a PS3.

Nevertheless, what's a third of a million copies, give or take? All signs point to Metal Gear Solid 4 being a commercial success: recognizable IP, wildly enthusiastic reviews, and fans out of their minds with glee. But the question is to what degree? We'll see if Konami or Sony is pleased enough to issue a press release later this week.

Yeah...it's VGchartz...not "VGAchartz"...

While I do tend to go along with the stats VGChartz publishes, I am questioning the number of PS3s sold... GTAIV certainly didn't increase sales of PS3s to any substantial level (or Xbox360s, for that matter), and I imagine that most of the hardcore Metal Gear fans already _have_ a PS3... We'll see, I guess!

Good lord, I must have old video cards on the brain. Thanks for the correction, Ilduce.

I was completely shocked how great this game is. Never played a Metal Gear game before, so I was pretty nervous when I got it, now I'm so happy I picked it up. I know you weren't so keen on it, Tom... I think I wouldn't have liked it as much if I had to critique it, or make myself more aware of it's flaws. Once in a blue moon, I can actually get pulled into a game and obssess over it, and for some reason, this game did it.

I'd be even happier if this game sold well enough to get a broad userbase for MGO (which has tons of potential).
