June 23, 2008: wallet threat level orange

bf_bad_company.jpgLook at all that new stuff on the shelves! Guitar Hero: On Tour, Battlefield: Bad Company (pictured above, looking uncharacteristically grim), and Alone in the Dark. This week has a lot of potential. For disappointment! The strange Nintendo DS version of Guitar Hero could turn out to be a silly gimmick. Electronic Arts' comic take on the Battlefield series might be all punch line and no joke. And Atari's reboot of the original survival horror game already launched with a loud splat in Europe. Proceed carefully and don't let your wallet out unsupervised.

Also available this week are two more attempts to bring traditional PC-based real time strategy games to console systems. The Kane's Wrath expansion for Command & Conquer 3 and Supreme Commander are both available for the Xbox 360. I'll give you a dollar if either one plays as well as it does on a PC.

The WALL-E games based on Pixar's new release are also out, but I can't imagine wanting to spoil the movie by playing what's probably going to be yet another half-baked Heavy Iron Studios cash-in tie-in. I dunno, maybe your kids are bugging you about this. Get them Boom Blox instead.

Only a dollar? Not much of a gambler, are you?

...And no love for the more interesting DS release of the week, FFTA2DS: Happyland in Ivalice?

Mr. Goodfellow, it's not exactly gambling when I'm volunteering to hand out dollar bills! There's a different word for that. Maybe 'stupid'? Although having now seen both games, I think my money is safe. :)

And Mr. Delaine, you have an excellent point, but I was thinking SRPGs might be a bit too esoteric for the average bear, even with the FF moniker. But, yeah, for those of us into SRPGs, that certainly constitutes an elevated wallet threat level.
