In the latest patch for the PC version of Frontlines: Fuel of War: Players can no longer stick Landmines onto their legs
I love gamers. I love that someone tried that. I love that there are probably entire clans that stick landmines onto their legs and run into groups of enemy players. It's unlikely the developers at Kaos Studios intended suicide bombing to be part of Frontlines, but to paraphrase Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park: "Gamers, uh, find a way." The new PC patch will also add Punkbuster anti-cheating, which leads me to wonder: Why wasn't it in there in the first place? Any PC game released without built-in cheat protection will be herded into obscurity by wallhacks and aimbots.
I haven't played Frontlines since around the time it came out, and I've never tried it on the PC. But based on my time with the Xbox 360 version, I'm impressed with it not just as a multiplayer game, but as a single player game. The campaign missions are lovely spectacles, complete with built-in challenges to encourage replay. Furthermore, I can say that Frontlines is the best Battlefield clone you can play on a console system. It's got some substantive downloadable content on the way, probably this month, in the form of five new maps, and a few new guns and vehicles. Assuming the early problem with hiccuping servers has been fixed, I heartily recommend Frontlines over Warhawk or Quake Wars.
(Before fans of Team Fortress 2, Rainbow Six: Vegas, and Call of Duty 4 get in a huff: I consider those very different kinds of team-based, online shooters. Proclaiming a "best" among those three would be a Sophie's choice level dilemma.)

That is pretty funny, I attended a meeting that was hosted by the guys who developed FrontLines and they talked about how this tactic came about during testing. I guess it became too exploit able.

Okay Frontlines over Quake Wars on the X360, but which do you recommend on the PC?

Paul, I'd vote Quake Wars on the PC. It's just that the 360 and PS3 ports are, IMO, really disappointing and not worth getting.

Mine-laden suicide buggies were a popular tactic in BF2 when I was playing. Pretty annoying to be cruising along in your tank and suddenly a jeep flies out of nowhere and explodes against you. Not as hilarious as the Exploding Pants, however.

I hear you Tom. I don't know what possessed me to pick up Universe at War and ET:QW for the X360 but I think I've broken my PC port addiction after picking up those two at full price.

I see the bomb laden jeeps all the time in BF2142. We call them "Jihad Jeeps" and though its a cheezy kill that gets overused by some players, it obviously has its roots in reality. Punkbuster btw is not the end all be all of cheat proofing so this reviewer may still be a bit disappointed in the long run.
